WUKA Guide to Period Pants: The Science of Leak-Free Days
Making the switch to sustainable period care shouldn't feel like a guessing game. From understanding our advanced capillary technology to managing cramps and flow, here is exactly how WUKA works with your body.
Can period underwear leak and how do I stop it leaking?
Period underwear is highly effective but can leak if it reaches full capacity or fits poorly. WUKA uses layered technology and capillary action to lock fluid deep into the absorbent core. To prevent leaks, ensure you choose the correct absorbency for your flow. At WUKA we offer light flow absorbency (5-10ml or 1-2 tampons worth, for spotting, discharge, light spotting), medium flow absorbency (15ml or 3 tampons worth, for moderate flow days), heavy flow absorbency (20ml+ or 4-5 tampons worth, for heavy flow, overnight), and super heavy flow absorbency (60ml or 12 tampons worth, for postpartum, extreme flow, long shifts). You can also gently pre-wash your pants 3–4 times before first use to activate the absorbent fibres.
Do period pants smell or get smelly during the day?
No, WUKA period pants are engineered to stay fresh and odour-free. Unpleasant odours only occur when moisture is trapped in warm, low-airflow conditions where bacteria thrive. WUKA uses breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics like Tencel™ and organic cotton that allow air to circulate, naturally preventing bacterial growth without using harsh antimicrobial chemicals or silver.
Do period pants feel wet when you’re wearing them?
No, WUKA pants are designed to feel dry against your skin. A moisture-wicking top layer quickly draws fluid away from the surface and into the absorbent core. Because menstrual blood leaves the body at body temperature, it is absorbed rapidly, while our breathable fabrics help regulate temperature to maintain a dry, comfortable feel.
How do period pants actually absorb blood (how do they work)?
WUKA period pants use a multi-layer system to absorb flow through capillary action. Fluid is drawn through a moisture-wicking top layer into a porous middle core that spreads the liquid to maximise storage. A breathable, leak-proof barrier then prevents any seepage onto your clothes, keeping you protected and dry for up to 12 hours.
Does wearing period underwear change your period or make it lighter?
Biologically, your flow does not change, but it often feels lighter and more manageable. Traditional disposables can cause irritation and sweating, whereas WUKA’s breathable fabrics provide a calmer experience. Because the high-capacity core allows for fewer changes throughout the day, your period becomes a less intrusive part of your daily routine.
Can period pants help with period cramps or reduce pain?
While period pants do not directly reduce uterine contractions, they significantly improve overall comfort. Our soft, non-restrictive materials prevent the chafing and "tight-waistband" discomfort often associated with disposables. For active pain relief, we recommend external heat therapy; WUKA offers wearable hot water bottles and heat patches to help relax muscles and soothe cramps.
